Choosing an Aviation Headset: A Very Personal Decision
We’re lucky to live at a time where we have such a variety of choices for everything from the coffee we drink, to the shoes we wear. Unfortunately, making a decision becomes harder when presented with so many options. In aviation, this holds true for the vast collection of headset options from a multitude of manufacturers. So how do you decide which headset is right for you?
Let’s get back to basics for moment. Why do pilots wear headsets? The obvious reasons are communication with other aircraft and air traffic control. All aviation headsets perform these two basic functions adequately.
But headsets also provide critical hearing protection from potentially damaging noises in the cockpit. The engine is sitting a few feet away in front of the pilot, and exhaust, propeller, and combustion sounds easily pass through the thin aluminum of the firewall and cabin.
And this is where differences in headset styles become more complicated. Below are some terms that help describe features of headsets:

NRR – “Noise Reduction Rating” refers to the level of sound that is reduced by a headset. It is a scale based on decibel levels such as”24db NRR”.
PNR – “Passive Noise Reduction” style headsets protect hearing by covering the ears and forming a seal against external noises. Much like hearing protectors – which is what they are at the most basic level – they buffer your ears from loud sounds and decrease the noise level that you hear. All headsets are passive in one way or another. Certain features of a unit can help or hurt the amount of passive noise reduction it provides. If the frame doesn’t fit properly, it can allow extra sound through the ear seal, and reduce the noise reduction.
ANR – “Active Noise Reduction” style headsets add electronic circuits and microphones to the headset that listen for external noises in the lower frequency ranges. When the headset pics up these sounds, it transmits the same sound 180 degrees out of phase, back through the speakers in the ear domes to cancel the unwanted noise. The number of microphones that pick up the sounds, and their placement make a big difference in the quality of noise cancellation. The microphones may be placed inside or outside of the ear domes. The noise cancelling circuitry also comes in two varieties: digital or analog. Deciding which one is better for noise cancelling is a topic of discussion that can get heated at times. Digital signals produce very clean audio, while musicians may argue that analog is the only way to produce the most realistic amplified sound from instruments. Both work very well, so determining which one is the right fit for you, is a personal decision.
Frames – Something has to hold the ear domes in place! From the earliest days that pilots could communicate with each other via radio, headset frames have mostly been made of metal. The most common type of frame is spring steel, so they could be adjusted, worn and return to their original position without permanent misshaping of the frame. These days frames come in a variety of materials including metal, plastic and composites. Plastic frames can be lighter and more comfortable on longer trips, the only downside being that they don’t hold up to abuse as well.
Ear Domes – The ear domes provide the hearing protection and a housing for the speakers and circuitry. These also vary in style, shape and color. The domes can affect the sound quality due to their shape. Volume controls are usually found on the domes as well.
Convenience features – If you can image it, an aviation headset has it. The only limitation is price. We’ll only list some of the more common features that pilots tend to choose:
- Foam or Gel ear seals. Gel seals tend to help with passive noise reduction and are usually more comfortable. Foam filled seals are the basic standard and work for most applications.
- Music or cell phone inputs for your iPod/iPhone/Mp3 gadgets
- Push to talk switches on the domes. Useful for airplanes that don’t have transmit buttons on the yoke.
- Bluetooth connection – helps reduce the amount of cables wrapped around your legs.
- ANR. Noise cancelling can help reduce fatigue on longer trips. Passive headsets are fine, but once you’ve flown with almost any ANR unit, you really don’t want to go back to Passive.
- Colors, frames, mic booms and a host of other features help add to the available choices.
Cost – Aviation headsets prices vary wildly. Passive style sets are less expensive, while ANR units top of the charts. Passives tend to be in the $100 to $400 range, while noise cancelling units start around $300 to $1200. Which one to choose depends on your mission and type of flying you do.
Which One is Right for You?
What is your mission profile? Are you learning to fly? Do you fly a lot of cross country trips, or the occasional $100 hamburger on weekends? Determine what 80% of your flying looks like and you’ll have a better handle on what to choose. The student or newly minted pilot may not need noise cancellation for the occasional 1 to 2 hours flight or pattern work. If you fly cross country, you would be served well by an ANR style headset that provides some comfort and relaxation for 2+ hours in the air.
A good way to help make a decision is to borrow or rent a few different styles to see what works best for you. The key being to test as many styles as you can. Just like shoes, it pays to try on a few pairs.
Making the Decision
Once you’ve settled on price and features for your style of flying, check out headsets review in the aviation magazines. Flying, Plane and Pilot, AOPA, Sport Aviation and many other have websites with various model performance tests. There is also a consumer reports style magazine called “The Aviation Consumer” that rates the best products in aviation.
Do some homework on the pilot supply websites. Customer testimonials are a great way to get feedback on the products you like. Some major sites are:

The First Few Hours
So you’ve purchased your ideal headset with all the accessories your budget allows for. Now it’s time to take your new whiz bang toy out to the airport for your first experience of audio bliss. Here are some points to remember that can make your first time more enjoyable.
Adjust your headpad and domes to fit comfortable over your head and ears. Most microphone booms are adjustable, so place the mic about 1/2 inch in front of your lips. This seems to work well for most pilots.
Now your ready to plug in. The headset is only one component of the audio system. It has to be plugged into the comm radio or intercom in the plane. Make sure to adjust the squelch level on the radio twice. If you’re on the ground taxiing, the sound level will be lower than when your at cruise RPM. Once you’re established in cruise, readjust the squelch to allow your normal speaking voice to trigger the mic.
After flying for a few hours, you’ll be able to tell how comfortable the headpad and ear seals are, as well as the overall communication clarity of your new unit. Hopefully you’ll have an aviation headset that provides years of enjoyment and comfort – and you won’t have to deal with any more choices for a while.
