From Muscleman to Powerful Man
WHO doesn’t know Arnold Schwarzenegger? From being a muscleman, he is admittedly one of the most prominent personality, who started carving a name out of bodybuilding.
From lifting weights, Austrian born Schwarzenegger started it out literally on his own by improvising weightlifting and bodybuilding equipment at the basement of their old house in Thal-Linak (also in Austria) because the cost of going to gyms for workouts appeared too expensive there at that time.
He went on to train all by himself, not until he met Kurt Marnul in 1961. Marnul, himself a bodybuilder and was in fact crowned as Mr. Austria, was reported to have been impressed with Arnold’s body and so he invited him over at the Graz-based Athletic Union, where he later trained. While training, he has set his sights on just one thing. Mr. Universe.
Earning victories after another
However, in 1965, the 18-year old Schwarzenegger went on to join the Austrian Army until he went on AWOL, just to compete in a bodybuilding tilt in Stuttgart where he won the title of Junior Mr. Europe.
The price however appeared costly. His vanishing act sent him to jail. Two years after, his career in bodybuilding took a shorter route to stardom. He went on to be the youngest winner of the Mr. Europe title. He also went on to win many other plums. Shortly after, he became the youngest Mr. Universe, which fulfilled his childhood dream.
Arnold goes to Hollywood
After winning the much coveted title, he decided to try his luck in the United States. Upon setting foot on American soil in 1968, he found himself working in Santa Monica (California) as a road worker in an apparent effort to establish himself in a land far away from a play where he came from.
Then he went on to compete in 1970 against the man who he considers an icon in the world of bodybuilding. He eventually defeated that man — Reg Park and went on to bring home Mr. Universe title for the second time. There was no more stopping for Arnold from there as he won the title of Mr. Olympia that same year.
It was at that juncture that he got his first Hollywood break when he was named as part of the cast of the movie “Hercules in NY”. The movie was a hit.
A year after, he won his second title for the Mr. Olympia tilt. Winning the Mr. Olympia title didn’t come in as difficult for Arnold. In fact, he won six of them, before he decided to retire in 1975.
In 1980, he goes out of “retirement” to compete for the Mr. Olympia again. Expectedly, he won his seventh title. Three years later, he got himself an American citizenship that bolstered his success that traces back from sheer bodybuilding.
He went on to do more movies that broke box-office hit records, including True Lies (1994), Junior (1994), Eraser (1995), Terminator 1 and 2 (1995 and 1996), Jingle All The Way (1996), Batman and Robin 1997), End Of Days (1998) The 6th Day (2002) and Terminator 3 (2002)
Muscleman wants Power
From lifting weights to acting, Arnold found himself in politics. He got himself a Republican Party nomination for California Governor in 2002 and went on to win the recall election the following year. He was re-elected into office in November 2006. He remains the California State Governor to date. GP
