Gotta Have It. Can’t Live Without it

Saturday mornings are, by far, my most favorite time of the week. Not only do I get to sleep in an hour longer than weekdays, but I get to go on my much anticipated Saturday morning run.

I’m a runner. I love the feeling of letting my feet take me for miles at a time away from whatever awaits me the rest of the day. I love the way my feet instinctively run in time to the music. I love the way the sun feels as it slowly comes up in the sky. I love the second wind that comes after about mile five that makes me think I could run forever. Although this may sound absurd to anyone who has never experienced the natural high that comes from running, I cannot deny the pure joy that comes from a ten mile morning run.

It hasn’t always been this way. A passion for running is something that comes with time, training, and endurance. Buy yourself a good pair of running shoes (my favorites are Asics with the gel sole insert.) Start small. Don’t think that you’ll be able to automatically jump to a five mile uphill run. There are a number of online sites that will guide you through the training process whether for a marathon or simply to build up your endurance.

Once you’ve built up your endurance and have graduated to running long distances a couple times a week, make sure that you are providing your body with sufficient nutrients in order to sustain your extended runs. Over the years I’ve tried a million different energy supplements promising to make me run faster, longer, and harder. Most of them did nothing more than empty my pocket, but I’ve made a list of my favorites.

  • Crystal Light on the Go Energy Wild Strawberry

Not only will Crystal Light energy keep you hydrated, but it’s got enough caffeine to keep you going throughout your workout. Make sure to drink sufficient amounts of water before your run, but if you’re planning to be out for a while, take it along with you to keep you hydrated throughout the morning. Remember that when you’re body feels thirsty, you’re already somewhat dehydrated. It’s best to keep sipping every 10-15 minutes throughout the run.

  • Zantrex-3 Energy Shot

One shot of this stuff and you’re good to go. If you’re looking for a quick boost in your energy supply, this energy shot is the way to go.

  • Clif Bar (chocolate brownie is my favorite)

These are best to eat 20-45 minutes before you run or a little bit at a time while you race to give you the extended energy to run. Not only do they have the right amount of protein, carbs and fiber, but they’re delicious too – unlike some of the other energy bars out there.

  • Power Gel (tangerine is my favorite)

Some people don’t like the feeling of the gel going down their throat, but it’s a great energy supplement if you can handle the texture. It’s best to slurp down powergel with water every 45 minutes of strenuous activity.

  • Jelly Belly Sports Beans

These are awesome energy boosters. Each pack has about the same amount of caffeine as half a cup of coffee and they contain just the right amount of carbs, vitamins and electrolytes to keep you going to the end of your run. Plus they’re fun to eat!

Best of all, the benefits of running all are endless… (ok, so I could think of 10)

1. Most people (approximately 60%) start running to manage their weight. With the exception of cross country skiing, running burns more calories per minute than any other form of cardio. After running consistently for two weeks, I noticed such a difference in the shape of my body. I was never overweight, but the shape of my legs became leaner and my stomach tightened up, getting rid of my annoying “love handles”.

2. Running regularly will help prevent muscle and bone loss. By running regularly, our skeleton gets the demand it needs to stay healthy and it promotes the human growth hormone that will help keep our bodies looking young.

3. Regular running can help reduce the risks of heart attacks because as we run, the arteries expand and contract almost three times as much as usual, in-turn strengthening the heart.

4. Regular exercise (not only running) boosts the immune system.

5. Running can provide a feeling of empowerment and freedom as you run hills, long distances, and letting your legs run free.

6. Exercise (especially running) is a great remedy for stress relief.

7. Running can literally improve your attitude by releasing endorphins (yes, the same ones that are released from having sex and eating chocolate).

8. Running can increase your mind’s ability to focus and overcome other obstacles in life. Let’s be honest, a long run won’t always be the top item on your list of things you want to do, but if you can train your mind to conquer the laziness and run, you’ll be able to overcome other obstacles that are sure to come your way.

9. Running can improve your coordination, especially on the uneven surface trails that force your body to maintain better control to prevent you from tripping or stumbling.

10. Last, but not least, unlike other sports, you can take your running shoes anywhere. Whether on vacation, on a business trip, or at a friend’s for the weekend, you can run anywhere.

Have I succeeded to inspire you? Grab your running shoes and head out the door. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the results!

*Note: Running isn’t for everyone (it can often be hard on your knees and on your back), so make sure to talk to your doctor if you’re unsure whether your body can handle the impact.
