Sports Radio Dangers
We may have got through the majority of the sports that will be on the TV and radio this year, with Wimbledon and the world cup out of the way, which is a good thing for road users. It was revealed this month that people may be putting both their lives and the lives of others at risk by listening to the coverage of these matches on the radio while driving.
The tests showed that if a person had an emotional attachment to what they were hearing, for example if they supported the team they were listening to on the radio, then their reactions would be slowed by twenty percent. This can add up to a six metre stopping time if a car is travelling over sixty miles oper hour, which is really worrying on the motorway. To put this into context, this is ten percent more than someone driving over the legal limit of alcohol.
The number of incidents where people needed to break hard were doubled when people were listening to stations like five live, and the report added “This suggests that the motorists were not paying enough attention to the road and had to make late decision to respond to the conditions and drivers on the road around them.”
The research concluded that most motorists did not associate the stress level of sport highly, as they would with arguing in the car or talking on their mobile phone.
